What do you write on?

I’ve always been a fan of laptops and likely wouldn’t enjoy writing as much without them. I love the portability, but with traditional laptops, the battery life always kept me searching for an outlet. Then along came the netbook. It’s little, sturdy and has an excellent battery life (mine gets 6-8 hours). The keyboard is about the same size as my laptop, and I can see the monitor in most light conditions. I take it everywhere I go, squeezing in an extra hour or more a day of writing than I used to be able to. It has quickly become my primary computer.

About nwharrisbooks

Born and raised in a small town in north Georgia, my imagination evolved under the swaying pines surrounding my family's log home. On summer days that were too hot, winter days that were too cold, and every night into the wee hours I read books. My face was rarely seen, always hidden behind a binding. I was nurtured on fiction. Now it is my turn to create some of my own. I live in sunny southern California with my beautiful wife and two perfect children (I may be biased). I write like I read, constantly. I studied anthropology at UCSB and medicine at SUNY Buffallo.

  1. I have to write my first draft by hand. For some reason, I don’t think the same when I type. My creativity can only flow via hand to paper. When I try it on the computer, I sit there and start daydreaming. Interesting how different people work.

I currently use a laptop however it is now a little on the old side and has no battery retention at all. I am pondering the next purchase (when I have the funds) however have always dismissed netbooks as being too small and flimsy. Your post has made me think again so now when I get around to looking, I shall broaden my horizons a little. Thank you.

    • Thanks for your comment! I’m on my second netbook since that post and can say I’m mostly happy with them. Currently, I get a little frustrated with the typical microsoft issues such as needing constant updates, freezing up if you don’t constantly clean the computer, etc. So…now I’m actually looking into a new laptop on which to write. Leaning towards the MacBook Air, but am a little nervous because of the price tag and because I’ve never owned a Mac computer. I love my Ipod and my Ipad, so I may take the leap soon. Also waiting to see what updates the MacBook Air 2013 will have. The beauty of the netbooks are: good battery life (initially, though it fades with time), portability, and the price tag. Even if you have to replace a netbook every two years as I’ve had to do, they are so cheap that it doesn’t break the bank. But oh, that MacBook Air looks so darn cool! Will keep you up to date on my final decision.

Can I just say that if I had the money I would definitely have a MacBook Air, no questions asked! The family computer in our house is an iMac and it is far superior to any of the previous Windows computers that we’ve had. I have to use the laptop as I need it constantly and the Mac has to be used by everyone else. My plan is to become a bestselling author (ha ha) and get the MacBook too! Keep me posted. Thanks.

      • Funny that, my plan is to become a bestselling author too! 😉 Thanks for the advice. I hear the MacBook Air may become less expensive in the near future, fingers crossed. Happy writing!
